But let justice roll down like waters
And righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. Amos 5:24
With the pandemic going on and the resulting economic crisis, joined this week by the racial upheaval in our cities, I’ve been struggling trying to write something smart, prophetic, unbiased, arresting, and thought-provoking — the one thing that hasn’t been said yet that will make everyone fall over smitten to the core, and of course go viral. All I’ve done so far is succeed in making the Catch late.
Michelle Goldberg, New York Times podcast host noted, “2020 started off like 1974 (an impeachment crisis), quickly became 1918 (a pandemic), turned into 1929 (economic crash), and is now 1968 (massive urban unrest).”
In over five decades of adult life, I have never gone through anything quite like this. It makes it difficult to know what to do. Address it, and you cannot possibly embrace the gravity of the situation; avoid it and you’re irrelevant; joke about it and you risk insulting hundreds of thousands who have lost loved ones, and whole communities that have only known injustice and inequality, and thousands losing jobs and companies out of business; spiritualize it and you risk trivializing it. But it’s hard to stay focused on anything else. Life keeps sucking you into some new development or controversy.
So tonight, we go back to something that never changes, the word of God. We are studying about the church because we are realizing we are a church. So join us tonight at 6:00 p.m. PDT for our International Zoom Bible study and get in on the ground floor. We’re finding out where the apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers are in our community. You may be one of them. Come find out tonight.
Marti is so pumped about finding out she has been an apostle all along (her track record of forming new bodies and national organizations has been operating since 1974) that she didn’t waste any time calling out a group of women from among the those attending Wednesday nights to go deeper. It’s not too late to get in on that, I only warn you that she runs a tight ship. You’ll have homework and no absences will be tolerated. But I guarantee: you will never be the same.
As you know, our daily Catch, designed for believers and unbelievers alike, is already in place, and the number of believers are swelling as the witness of God’s people is used of the Spirit to bring nonbelievers to a neutral and unthreatening place where the word of God can draw them powerfully to saving faith in Christ. There is never any apology for teaching the straight, pure word of God, and it is doing its work.
If you haven’t involved your friends and family in the Catch, this would be the time. Just send them to our website at <catchjohnfischer.com> where they can check out past Catches and sign up to receive the daily email. The Catch is the wave of the future.
And pray for the world wide community — for justice and equality to prevail, for love to win out over hate, and that this pandemic would subside. And if you think that request is too big or too general, then check out Jesus teaching us to pray: “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” That’s pretty big.
