Labor Day weekend. Can you believe it’s the last official weekend of summer? I haven’t even gotten my barbecue out yet. Does this mean we’ve already had Memorial Day? Most high schools around here have already had their first game. College games start this weekend. School busses are hitting the streets. My baseball app just announced it already has the 2019 Spring Training schedule. My Angels are looking forward to that. That’s about all they have to look forward to now.
This would be a good time to recognize your “labor force,” and appreciate all the people
who service you regularly in your marketplace that you know by name. For me, it’s Leeann at the bank; Francisco, who carries my bags to the car at the pet store; Louisa and Billy at the drug store; Miguel and Ricardo at the supermarket meat counter; Cathy at the checkout stand; John, who cleans our rugs a couple of times a year; Ron, the bi-polar baker (less polar these days since he found a sweetheart); Harry at the Mail Stop; Cindy at the dry cleaners; Manny and Dario at the garage; Owen at the print shop; Louis, the tree trimmer; and Adam, the pest control guy. When you start to care about this list, it’s surprising how large it gets.
Then there are those people who know my name even
though I don’t know theirs: like the baristas at the Koffee Klatch who all know me, the server at the pantry where I order lunch sometimes, and there’s one to-go order I make so frequently at one restaurant that the hostess always says, “Got it, John,” over the phone. I’m sure there are more, but these are who I can think of right now. I had no idea until I started this list how many people I meet on a regular basis. Try it. I bet you’ll be surprised too.
This is my marketplace community. These are the people in my “Johnny’s Cafe.” I want to be extra-specially aware of them this weekend and take the time to thank them for “laboring” for me. I’m sure they don’t hear that very often. Everything we do to foster kindness in this current culture marked by meanness and ill will, is a simple step into furthering the kingdom of God on earth.
“Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10
Marti is resisting but I have her tied down and gagged while I publish this: IN HONOR OF LABOR DAY WEEKEND, WE WILL BE TAKING OFF TOMORROW (FRIDAY) AND MONDAY, EXCEPT FOR CHURCH (how can you ever cancel church?) WHICH WILL BE HELD AS USUAL ON SUNDAY AT 6PM PDT. THE CATCH, AS WELL AS ALL OTHER CATCH MINISTRY ACTIVITIES, WILL RESUME ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4. ENJOY YOUR LABOR DAY WEEKEND!
