Wear your heart out

Though we have never met face-to-face, your words reach my heart everyday.

– Annette Marie Carter

Of all the wonderful birthday greetings I received last month (thank you all so much — believe me, I’m still making my way through them) this one stands out in particular. I cannot think of anything I would be happier or prouder to hear someone say than to hear that my words had reached their heart.

How does one do that? How do you reach someone’s heart? I don’t think it’s necessarily a conscious effort. And I think anyone can do it. I think you can reach someone’s heart if you speak your own. Speak your heart and you will most definitely reach someone else’s heart. Especially if the Lord is in it, because the Holy Spirit moves your heartfelt message along. The Holy Spirit interprets your heart to another heart. It’s like being tuned-in to the same frequency. We’re both operating on the same wavelength. That’s how we can know each other even if we haven’t met face-to-face, because we’ve already met heart-to-heart.

It’s a long way to someone’s heart, yet the distance is shorter for some than for others. thYou’ve heard it said that so-and-so wears her heart on her sleeve. That would mean a relatively short  distance to that person’s heart. Some experience has caused them to become that vulnerable — that their heart is right out there for all to see.

Some wear their hearts out of compassion.

Jesus wore His heart out. You can see it time and time again, usually brought on by someone’s pain, suffering or humiliation. Jesus looked on people with compassion for they were like sheep without a shepherd.

“Who touched me?” Jesus said once, prompting the disciples to chide Him, since they were being pressed on all sides by the crowd. It could have been one of many people. Yet Jesus knew someone had touched Him with their heart. Sure enough, a woman came forth out of the crowd and bowed, trembling, before Him, and told Him about her sickness and how she thought if she could even touch the hem of his garment she would be healed. “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction.” (Mark 5:34) That was a heart-to-heart connection made through the very hem of His garment.

Jesus wore His heart out. Mine stays way too far inside. Got to wear it out. Where is your heart today?

John, you did it again! You touched my heart in your writing about the Holy Spirit, which by the way our Tuesday Morning Bible Study is studying right now. Thanks for everyday!
