The art of divine sparrow-watching

I sing because I’m happy;
I sing because I’m free;
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me.
– Civilla D. Martin

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care… So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. – Matthew 10:29-31

Our story today comes from Merv, one of our Prayer Warriors, who experienced the following yesterday while at the local market. Merv is blind so he is acutely aware of sounds and what people say in public.

“Today as I walked into the grocery store and prepared to approach the Customer service desk in order to ask for assistance in shopping, I witnessed a woman screaming that Western Union was down because Trump won the election. As she continued to rant and rave at a very high volume, she lamented the idea that this world was doomed because her side lost. All because the Western Union computers were down.

“Later when I was checking out, a man went through much the same procedure, directing his misdirected rage at a checkout lady because the store computer was temporarily down. He was also convinced that the world was doomed because his side lost the election yesterday.

“Last night I sent out a tweet before going to bed. At that time I had a feeling who was going to win. I said no matter who wins or loses, His eye is on the sparrow. This blind5sparrow is going to bed. Since many know me in the tech world as blind5sparrow. Smile!”

Merv is referring to an old gospel song based on Jesus equating His love and care for us to the same care that makes Him notice when even a tiny sparrow falls to the ground. “So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

So Merv went home and went to bed on Election Night because his faith, trust and sense of security comes from the Lord, who doesn’t miss a single sparrow fall, not from whoever the next President was going to be. He would find that out soon enough.

Why should I feel discouraged and why should the shadows come?
Why should my heart be lonely and long for heaven and home?
When Jesus is my portion, a constant Friend is He,
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.

Note: The song, “His Eye Is On the Sparrow” was written in 1905 and was made famous by actress, blues and gospel singer, Ethel Waters, who died in 1977 and was a guest artist at many of Billy Graham’s crusades. For an absolutely stunning new version of this song by Lauren Hill and Tanya Blount, click here and enjoy. And thank you, Merv for putting things in perspective for us. Merv is a seminary graduate whose main ministry is to pray for you. He, along with the other Prayer Warriors pray for all of us every day, and if you have a special request, let us know. We pass on everything we receive, and if we sense more than prayer is needed, we will contact you with other resources.
