What does true love mean?

True love means you go seek your fortune so you can return and provide for your true love.

True love means you wait for your true love to return as he promised.

True love means you scale the Cliffs of Insanity. Without a rope. Or at least you try.

True love means you dive down into the same ravine you just pushed the Dread Pirate Roberts into as soon as you realize the Dread Pirate Roberts was actually your true love, Wesley, whom you thought was dead.

True love means you brave the Fire Swamp together.

True love means you dive in head first into the quicksand in the Fire Swamp to rescue your true love. [Note: The original script called for Wesley to jump in feet first holding his nose, but Cary Elwes felt that was not a very heroic way to go about saving your true love. So he dove in, much to the chagrin of the stunt crew who had not prepared the quicksand effect for a forward entry.]

True love means you actually believe you can singlehandedly take on Humperdinck, the six-fingered Count and at least twelve knights armed with crossbows, when Buttercup gives herself up to save her true love who happens to be you.

True love means you can have the life sucked out of you and only be “mostly” dead.

True love means you can stand up to Prince Humperdinck when you have no strength in your arms or legs.

True loves means you can show Humperdinck up to be the coward that he really is when you are still mostly dead.

I need this inspiration. I need to keep a vision of Wesley leading Buttercup by the hand and hacking his way through the Fire Swamp because true love’s path for me is still fraught with cliffs and swamps and quicksand and duels and even an occasional R.O.U.S.. This is what we all need to remember from this story, indeed, it is what the story is for: When you’re driven by true love, you can do anything.

This is true love. You think this happens every day?

To answer: “This is true love. You think this happens every day?” Yes, I am sure of it.

Maybe I was the only one for whom this was a very difficult Catch. Maybe I was not alone.

The movie is about true love between people. Maybe there is someone else for whom that is a very painful subject. If there is: you are not alone. I know your pain. The knife is still buried between my shoulder blades, and I am still standing at the bottom of deep ditch from which there is no way out.

Of course, there is only one source of unending true love. I know that true love. That love will never stab me in the back and that true love is walking beside me at the bottom of the ditch and that true love will never leave me.

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13
